Okay, so last year in July I had this group of primary kids of different ages and they came to our school 2-3 hours a week during a month. It was summertime so we were supposed to do something more chill while still learning and practising English. So, it had to be something motivating and fun and focused mainly on oral skills.
One of the kids was into Robin Hood at the time for some reason so I thought: why not? The real story was a bit too long and difficult perhaps for them so I started to think of a story based on Robin Hood’s characters and inspired by its story.
I came up with a short, simple and fun (at least the kids said it was fun, 😅) story. Every day they practised their lines, we prepared some props and decided all together how to create the setting in the classroom and the last day I told the parents to come a bit earlier to pick them up and they acted out the story in front of them. It was a great success! I honestly felt very proud of them, especially because during those weeks there were moments I wasn’t so sure it would work out, you never know with kids! They could have gone too shy or not remember at all their lines… but it was perfect! And the parents obviously loved seeing their kids talking in English and enjoying it so much.
Of course it was not enough to just practise the play during the classes, so I also made worksheets with vocabulary from the story, a board game and a memory game, we made our own Robin Hood hats, a poster to decorate the classroom, flashcards…
And just like that it turned out to be great for everyone! Apart from the good feeling I got from the experience, after a year I can say it’s one of the top selling resources on our TPT store!
