Bringing the Magic of The Snowman by Raymond Briggs to your ESL Classroom

Some stories stay with you forever. For my sister and me, The Snowman by Raymond Briggs is one of those tales. Every Christmas, for as long as I can remember, we’ve curled up together to watch the film. There’s something so magical about the quiet, snowy world it creates—the innocence of childhood, the beauty of a winter’s day, and the bittersweet message of memories we carry with us. Even as adults, we still make time to relive the magic each year.

Here is the proof!😅 We even had these cute stuffed snowmen we carried around!

Now that we’re teachers, we want to share this love with our students. The Snowman isn’t just a story; it’s an experience. It’s a chance to show students the beauty of a wordless narrative, the power of imagination, and the joy of winter traditions. That’s why we created a resource to bring this timeless classic to life in the classroom.

What Makes The Snowman So Special for Teaching?

The beauty of The Snowman lies in its simplicity. The story is told through pictures and music, making it perfect for engaging young learners, ESL students, or any child who enjoys creative storytelling. It offers countless teaching opportunities:

  • It introduces winter vocabulary like scarf, hat, snow, and wellies.
  • It helps students understand sequencing through the boy’s magical journey.
  • It sparks discussions about feelings and imagination.

With this in mind, we designed a comprehensive activity pack that brings The Snowman to life in an educational and fun way.

What’s Included in Our Snowman Resource

Here’s how we’ve translated the magic of The Snowman into the classroom:

  3. Listening Activity

  4. Reading Comprehension
