George’s Marvellous Medicine for the ESL Classroom

Whether you are using the original version or the Penguin Readers adapted version for English as a second or foreign language learners, this blog post is for you!

If there’s one author who can consistently spark joy, creativity, and a little delightful mischief in our ESL classroom, it’s Roald Dahl!

Roald Dahl’s storytelling is unique in how it effortlessly combines humour, imagination, and language-rich narratives. It’s precisely why his stories resonate with ESL students (and with everyone really), offering them an engaging entry point to language learning that feels less like ‘study’ and more like pure fun.

I have to say that you might encounter some surprised faces in your class—after all, Dahl’s story is delightfully bold and unapologetically rebellious, offering a refreshing change from the more carefully coated materials students often see these days. Which I think is great for a change! Once they overcome that, you’ll see how much they can learn from it and how much language there is to practise.

We’ve created a resource pack where you will find everything you need to make the most of this story. Ready to use and tested in our classroom!

What Will You Find in This Resource?

  • Clear instructions and answer key for smooth lesson delivery.
  • Interactive vocabulary activities such as matching exercises and word searches.
  • Comprehension questions to thoroughly check understanding.
  • Creative writing exercises including imaginative tasks.
  • A fun and practical «recipe» activity inspired by the story for creative language use.
  • Parts of the house plus George’s ingredients vocabulary.
  • Character descriptions to learn adjectives.
  • Book review.
