How to decorate an ESL Classroom?

Decorating your EFL classroom is more than just making it look appealing; it’s about creating an engaging, educational environment that enhances learning. The right decor can inspire students, reinforce lessons, and make your classroom a more inviting place to learn English. Here are some tips and ideas on how to effectively decorate your EFL classroom using educational posters, including some fantastic options you can find in my store.

1. Set the Tone with Themed Posters

Themed posters can help set the tone for your classroom and create a cohesive learning environment. Whether you want to focus on grammar, vocabulary, cultural aspects, or idioms, there are posters designed to suit every need.

2. Create a Vocabulary Wall

A vocabulary or word wall is an excellent way to reinforce new words and concepts. They not only add color to your walls but also serve as constant reminders for students, helping them to recall and use new vocabulary. Here is a pic of what I have in my classroom at the moment.

As simple as this. Just some colourful sticky notes in which students write the new words onto this black cardboard!

3. Incorporate Cultural Elements

Introducing elements of English-speaking cultures can make your lessons more engaging and relatable. Consider using posters that showcase aspects of British or American culture. Our Vintage British Music Poster and Iconic British Singers Poster are great examples. These posters celebrate British culture through music, sparking curiosity and discussion among students.

4. Use Humour to Engage Students

Humorous posters can lighten the mood and make learning more enjoyable. I’m a big fan of fun illustrations that portray common language mistakes or idioms to teach important concepts in a memorable way. Students are more likely to remember lessons that make them laugh and engage them visually. I can say from my experience that these posters have definitely caught their attention and have made them want to ask about those mistakes.

They can see how we should use the -ing or -ed version of adjectives here!

They will definitely stop saying ‘I am agree’ 😅

5. Highlight Key Grammar Points

Grammar can be challenging for EFL students, but with the right tools, you can make it more accessible. Decorate your classroom with posters that highlight key grammar points, such as tenses, sentence structures, and punctuation.

6. Interactive and Rotating Displays

Keep your classroom dynamic by changing up your displays regularly. Rotate posters to keep the environment fresh and align with your current teaching topics. This not only keeps the decor interesting but also ensures that students are exposed to a variety of content over time.

7. Encourage Student Interaction

Encourage students to interact with the posters. Create activities or assignments that require them to reference the posters. For example, you can have students find idioms on the Animal Idioms Posters or use the Homophones and Confusing Words Posters to practice writing sentences.

Jungle animals, Farm animals, Cats, Dogs, Desert animals, find them all!
